25. Celebrating Black History Month 2024

I’m not particularly fond of the label ‘Black’.

It is a label that was placed upon me after I left my home country, Nigeria. A label that comes with its unique perks and baggage. A label I can hardly escape when I am outside my continent.

Despite my reservations with the label, this year, I choose to join in the celebrations for February as Black History Month. To celebrate the journeys and excellence of people of African descent and the vibrant contributions we have made at home and abroad.

I celebrate my journey as an African in the diaspora for fourteen years. I celebrate my rich Nigerian heritage and the values of faith, hard work, resilience, and community it instilled in me, enabling me to thrive in countries like Canada, Australia, and the USA.

I celebrate my peers who are similarly embracing their heritage and making a positive impact on the world. May we find continued success in our home countries and the places we have chosen to call home.

Happy Black History Month!
